Leeds United lift the FA Cup!
April. 21st, 2008
The Leeds United Supporters Trust
got their hands on the FA Cup on Sunday 20th April, while attending a meeting of Supporters Direct in Bradford! (Shame about the red ribbons, but at least we got the lufc logo in the shot!)
Board members took part in several development workshops throughout the day covering a variety of Supporters Trust activities.
As well as formal development training, provided by Supporters Direct, this was a valuable
opportunity to meet with members of many other Supporters Trust Boards and to exchange ideas and learn from each other.
Leeds Board members intend to increase the representation of LUFC fans as regards the club and the wider community.
The meeting closed with a discussion forum dealing with club ownership and the Trust took the opportunity to discuss current pressing issues both with the Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe MP and the Chief Operating Officer of the Football League, Mr Andy Williamson.
The issue of the missing Jules Rimet replica which should have been presented to Les Cocker was raised with Malcolm Clark, an FA Council member. Malcolm has already written to FIFA President Sepp Blatter with regard to the WC3 medals issue.
World Cup '66. Medals for the backroom boys.
April. 15th, 2008
Last years announcement by FIFA's Sepp Blatter, that all non playing squad members of winning squads, between 1930 & 1974 would receive a winners medal, was long overdue.
Today's World Cup winners receive a total of 45 medals, 23 for the playing squad, with the rest going to various backroom staff. What is less well known is that in '66, only the 11 on the field received a medal, there was nothing for the players who had played in games up to the final. There was nothing for the 'backroom boys'- Alf Ramsey, Harold Shepherdson, & our own Les Cocker. Sadly all three are no longer with us, but pressure is mounting on FIFA to award these medals posthumously.
Sheffield Central MP Richard Caborn, has asked FIFA to grant the medals, Our own FA has made representations to FIFA, and FIFA spokesman Pekka Odriozola has confirmed that FIFA are looking at the situation.
The Football Supporters Federation has raised the matter within the FA and is now writing
to FIFA to urge their consent for these medals to be awarded.
You can add your weight to the mounting pressure by signing an online petition, which will be passed on to the appropriate authorities. You will find the petition on www.worldcup66.com. The 1966 medals are due to be awarded at Wembley at the USA game in May.
